Industrial Vintage French Kitchen – Before and After with Source Guide

Take a look at my newly renovated industrial vintage French kitchen with before and after pictures and a source guide!

Welcome to my newly renovated Industrial Vintage French Kitchen!

Remember how I’ve been dropping hints since the summer that my kitchen is going to be photographed for a magazine? I’ve only shared snippets here and there.

Well, there were a few things that still needed to get done, they are finally done and Tracey Ayton did come by for a photo shoot just before the Holidays for a Christmas house tour photo shoot! You might have noticed on Instagram. THAT was a dream come true. She said she’d still love to come back to not only shoot my kitchen but my whole house. Wow!

For now, I’m going to give you a kitchen tour of my dream kitchen. White, bright, Industrial French and Vintage.

I worked with my cabinet maker to come up with a totally personalized kitchen that was just right for me.

Here’s how I did it.

This kitchen has gone through some transformations.

This is what it looked like when we bought the place. Totally 80s with a sunshine ceiling and all.

The kitchen before with its dated look and dingy walls.
The before picture of the kitchen.

Then this is what it looked like when we did some minor renovations like painting the cupboards, changing the hardware, adding a bar area, taking down upper cabinets, and adding glass fronts to the upper cabinets.

The kitchen after with white cabinets.
Stainless steel fridge and white cabinets.

And now the kitchen completely renovated.

The fully renovated kitchen with white counters and a wooden center butcher block.

Everything in our house was completely redone except the kitchen so now the house is complete.

I had the bulkhead removed from this wall so the cupboards could extend to the ceiling.

The kitchen before with some items ripped out for renovation.

I love the Sub-Zero fridge and built-in microwave with large cupboards.

Glass cupboard doors are a must for me.

We never changed the floor plan so it was relatively easy to take the cupboards out and put the new ones in and there were no plumbing changes.

This porcelain sink is my favorite part of the kitchen. It took a long truck drive from California to Vancouver for me.

And the bridge faucet is gorgeous too!

I love subway tile. It’s always been my dream.

Initially I didn’t have this part of the kitchen tiled but when Tracey Ayton popped by she encouraged me to do it. I’m sooo glad I did!

And on the opposite wall is the kitchen office. The cabinets were extended to the ceiling and a new countertop added.

Remember the closet-turned-mini butler pantry? It got a few updates as well including a Miele coffee maker.

The Design Process

Okay, here is how I designed it. I put together these images for my cabinet maker and he then made his cabinet plans from these.

  1. Wow! Absolutely stunning! Too many favourites too list, but I’ll try! Light fixture over table, built in microwave, tile on entire wall, and cabinet detailing!

  2. That really is a dream kitchen Jamie and I absolutely love it! You’re such a talent. I can totally picture myself cooking in it! LOL

  3. I love stacked cabinets. It’s a clean finished look and gives you extra storage for pretty dishes. I did that in my house due to a lack of space and then was very pleased with the look. Your kitchen is perfect and timeless.

  4. I love the subway tile. I so want to re-do the kitchen in my home I moved into 9 months ago.
I would like to paint the bottom cabinets a medium shade of gray, do a granite counter top w/ lots of white and veins of gray and taup and white subway tile and white cupboards on the top. I redid the floor with engineered hardwood in a taup grayis barn wood when I moved in. I just don,t know where to start.

  5. Your kitchen came out beautifully! I was just looking at your kitchen chairs today, no joke…it appears from pictures that the vertical rails that make up the back of the chair are actually in front of the part your back would rest on…can you feel those? I know that is a weird question…they are beautiful chairs, how are they on comfort?

    1. Hi Jennie, thank you so much! Not a weird question at all, they are quite comfortable actually. Your back mostly rest on the top part but they are really comfortable.

  6. I love your kitchen. We are gutting ours within the next couple weeks and starting from scratch, which is so exciting. My question is did you change your butler’s pantry? I had pinned that and am planning on turning a built in pantry into something very similar to what you had- open shelving and the doors beneath. But I did not notice that in your updated kitchen photos, was that where your desk now is located? The other thing I was thinking about was lining that area with subway tile.

    1. Hi Marcy,
I still have that little butler pantry. I was planning on showing it again soon. The kitchen office was always there too but I just updated the cabinets and countertops. The butler pantry now holds a built-in coffee maker. Tiling it with subway tile would be gorgeous! The beadboard is still there but subway tile would have been amazing.
      Hugs,
      Jamie

  7. Jamie,

I am in love with it all. i am in the process of upgrading our kitchen but we are working with the cabinets we have because they were in near perfect condition. Your post has given me tons of ideas and inspiration! THanks for sharing and it’s BeautifuL!

  8. Thanks so much for sharing! We’re looking at redoing our kitchen, too, including cabinet painting and redoing our island to better accommodate six children. LOVE the detail on the island corners and cabinetry going all the way to floor! Made the kitchen look beautifully custom and high-end. Very fun to see!

  9. Jamie-
Our kitchen, family room and laundry room are totally gutted now. We are down to a frig, washer and dryer. Most of the big decisions are made, and the contractors are working away, my only holdout Is the countertop selection. Because of the existing space our kitchen is kind of galley style with an 8 ft island running down the middle. Going with white shaker cabinets and painting the island SW dovetail. I am trying to decide between colonial white granite and Quartz – possibly Lagoon or Cirrus. I see you had granite and changed to Quartz, assuming price is irrelevant why did you choose Quartz over granite? It is such a big decision and I want to make the right one so I would love your input, thanks!

    1. Hi Marcy,
Sorry I didn’t respond sooner. Life is crazy here lately. I really love the look of carrara marble but it’s too porous and quartz is much more durable with kids in the house. Carrara even leaves water rings. The quartz I picked is mostly white but has grey veins in it. I LOVE it! I’m so glad I made that choice. Granite is great too but I couldn’t find a color I liked.

  10. This is seriously stunning. I’m OBSESSED! And it’s one of my final features tomorrow for the last YDTT party. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

  11. Smitten! Completely smitten! And thank you for sharing your design process! I hope you enjoy your beautiful kitchen for many years.

  12. gah! I love it all! It’s so bright and shiny… just makes me so envious. I think white kitchens are so beautiful! Great work!

  13. Your kitchen is gorgeous, Jamie! WOW! So bright and beautiful! Hope to see you at our party again tomorrow! 🙂

  14. Jaime, your kitchen (and the rest of your home, for that matter) is stunning. Congratulations. All the details look perfect. May I ask where you got that awesome butcher block table? Or did you perchance make it yourself? Thank you so much, Ardith

  15. Hi Jamie,
Was wondering if the chair finish you picked is:
    Weathered Oak Drifted?
Or one of the other finishes?
    Thanks!

  16. Very pretty kitchen! I noticed you have one light over the sink and one on either side of the range. Is that enough light at night? Do you have any recessed lights? Is there a reason for not using them? I am at the electrical part of our reno, and I would love your thought process on this. I can see that during the day you have a TON of light, but I am concerned with night lighting in our kitchen. Did you put in under-cabinet lighting? Thank you.

    1. Hi Karen,
There is a schoolhouse pendant light above the butcher block but the ceiling has awful popcorn ceiling so I try not to get the ceiling in the photos. One of my old kitchen posts (when a light reno was done) might show that light. And all of that lighting is definitely enough. I would have loved recessed lighting but we didn’t touch electrical or remove ceilings when we renovated. The one pendant light and the other pendants make the kitchen very bright though. No under cabinet lighting.

  17. Love this kitchen!! Just starting renovation and you’ve given me lots of ideas! Can I ask the name of the cupboard hardware you used? I went thru your link you provided to Lee Valley tools but wasn’t sure I saw hardware that matched yours. Thank you!

    1. Hi Kristin,
It was a Panasonic and we specifically bought that microwave because it came with a trim kit sold at the appliance store, Trail Appliances here in Vancouver, BC. I’ve moved from that house since 🙁 Good luck!
      Hugs, Jamie

  18. Beautiful kitchen! May I ask you how you like the subzero french door refrigerator? I plan to get the same one.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Cindy,
I did love that Subzero fridge. I’m in a new house now and have a Jenn-Air counter depth fridge that was much cheaper and love just the same. I will say that the doors on the Subzero fridge are really heavy. It takes a bit of muscle to open the doors. It had to be professionally installed because of the heaviness of it. Good luck!

  19. Hi Jamie,

I know this post is from 3 years ago, but I’ve been using your pics for the kitchen remodel I’m doing right now. It’s timeless and classic!! I have a very specific question that I’m really hoping you can answer…. do you know which color and brand of grout you used with the subway tile? Also, I love the choice for electrical outlet covers, do you remember where those are from? But the grout is most important! Thank you so so much!! Stunning work!! I’m crossing my fingers my kitchen will come out as beautiful.

    Thank you!!!
    Jessica

    1. Hi Jessica,
Thanks!! It really is a classic kitchen and I still love looking at it. So I just told my contractor I wanted charcoal grout and that’s what they used. I’ve helped other people with their grout and just told them charcoal grey and it’s turned out amazing! There’s not much difference between the slightly variations of grey grout out there, just as long as it’s a dark charchoal grey you’ll be good 😉
The outlet covers I believe I got at Rejuvenation or Lee Valley Hardware.
      Good luck on the reno!
      Hugs, Jamie

  20. Hi Jamie,
Your kitchen is beautiful; very clean and bright. I laughed when I saw it was previously yellow and and you referred to it as 80’s or 90’s, as I painted my white kitchen yellow when we moved in 6 years ago, 2012. Anyhow, I found your site doing a search for “soffit lighting above a kitchen island.” I am doing a mini-reno on my kitchen. I am keeping my white cabinets, as they are nice and plain, in great condition, and like you I have numerous, with an L-shaped kitchen, a large island, a built in desk, and a butler’s pantry. However, now I am painting the kitchen a light gray, and I have already built my own wood plank counters. I know, I know, on to my question: above my island currently is a useless soffit type drop down with 2 can recessed lights. I was thinking of converting those to pendant lights, but this soffit thing already hangs like 20 inches down from the ceiling. I know pendants are supposed to be 36 in above the island-the soffit makes it difficult, but my mini-reno doesn’t include hiring a drywall guy to take it down. How high off the peninsula are your pendants? Do you feel like people look directly at the lights when standing in the kitchen and they are on? TYSM in advance!!!!!

    1. Hi Jenn,
Thank you for your comment! I didn’t mean to say that any kitchen painted yellow was ‘dated’, my apologies. I know of some beautifully painted yellow cabinets too 😉
So I haven’t lived in this house for a few years now so it’s hard for me to figure out the dimensions. I just measured the pendants to my island in my current kitchen and the bottom tip of the pendants to the island is 28″. It’s a big island so it’s probably not noticeable with the big pendants but they do not feel like they are shining in our eyes when sitting down. And I don’t recall that the pendants from this house did either. Here is a link to my current kitchen if you want to compare:https://somuchbetterwithage.com/my-big-beautiful-kitchen-renovation-before-and-after/
      Hope this helps.

  21. We’re currently looking at re-doing and designing our kitchen, so this post is fab, as it isn’t all that big. I’m looking to completely change the styling and these are right up my street! Thank you so much for sharing so many amazing ideas.

    1. Hi Jacqui,
The subway tile is 3×6 and the grout is a charcoal grey. I don’t have an exact color number for the grout, I just picked the darkest charcoal grey!
      Hope this helps.
      Jamie
