Living Room Source Guide

Since my charming living room tour,  I’ve had questions from you about where I sourced some of my decor items and what paint color I used on the walls. This post is all about the sources!!

Now I know you won’t be able to go out and find these exact items as a lot of them were thrift store finds or purchased many years ago. But I wanted to show where I got these items so you know that you can put so many inexpensive decor items together for not very much money.

So let’s start off with the wall color. Most of the main floor including the living room is Country Beige by Behr. It’s a beautiful creamy timeless neutral color that I love. It makes everything in the room light and bright. I’ve always had good luck with Behr colors.

I posted about my couch here. It’s come a long way from those first posts! I bought this couch on Craigslist as I’ve coveted a similar style at Restoration Hardware for years! When I found it, I bought it immediately even though the upholstery was dated however it was in amazing shape and it was only $300.

It came with a bunch of cushions all along the back which I immediately got rid of.

I bought the new upholstery fabric from Fabric.com: Belgium basketweave upholstery in tan. It seems scary to buy fabric online but I always order a few samples first and move it around the room to see which colors I like best with the lighting.

and I paid just over $1000 to have it reupholstered. I wasn’t going to do this myself and wanted it to be professionally. I’m so happy with the way it turned out!

And look at those legs!!!

The curtains and topiaries I made two years ago. These curtains are very simple to make and I’ll make a tutorial one day soon. Here’s my tutorial on blackout curtains for you to look at for now.

The ottoman {$150} is from Home Sense {like Home Goods but in Canada} and the fireplace screen is from Restoration Hardware purchased around six years ago.

I love this old eye catching rusty green sap bucket. I purchased it at an antique store for nearly nothing. My friend, Tanis, gave me these faux peonies as she knows they’re my fave flower 😉  Thanks T!

The grey cable knit throw is from Chapters Indigo. I bought it on clearance for $20. Chapters Indigo is kinda like Barnes & Noble but in Canada {and way cooler in my opinion}. They have amazing decor items. And I’m in no way affiliated with them although I wish I was!

Our Pottery Barn moved buildings a few years ago and had an amazing moving clearance sale and I scored that iron side table for under $100!

I bought our tall lamp from Canadian Tire and replaced it with a better shader a customized look. The lamp was around $50.

I have two of those glass and iron side tables from Home Sense but only one fits in this room so it’s down in the basement in case I every move things around.

The velvet and gold trim pillows are from West Elm and the other natural pillows are from Restoration Hardware.

Did you know Pottery Barn has rugs in clearance in the back, not on display? Just ask and they’ll tell you which ones are there. That’s how we scored this wool rug for around $500 which is an amazing price for  a 9 x 12 foot size!

One of my first big girl furniture pieces that I bought was this armoire from a local Vancouver store called Chintz & Co. I probably paid close to $800 for it but that’s nearly 15 years ago now. Same with that black fan. People can’t get over that I purchased it from Ikea. Yep, Ikea can have some amazing finds!

I purchased the two french side chairs from Home Sense. My trick is to go to stores like that often and early in the morning to find the best furniture items!

And here is how I’ve styled my bookshelves:

I’ve listed a breakdown of what each item is and where I got it from. Detailed? Yes. I thought you may want to know.

The elements listed on the shelf in the living room.

I want you to see you that you can style your bookshelves with every day stuff like magazines and frames and shells. I think the most expensive items on these shelves are the hardcover design books. Some of these were gifts {like the antique radio} but most were thrift store/antique store/Home Sense cheapy finds.

The open white shelving in the living room.

I love anything white and neutral. The reason all these odd items work together is because they are all neutral but with lots of texture. I’ve styled these bookshelves more times than I care to count but this is the way I like it. Lots of open space, not a lot of clutter, and all in the same neutral family.

Because I’m a neutral lover, I always remove my book covers. I like the neutral hardcover as opposed to the busy jacket. I also buy inexpensive books often from thrift stores. I just look at what the book looks like without the jacket. It’s usually gorgeous! Also, if you come across hardcover books that are in rough shape, tear the whole cover off and wrap some twine around a pile of them. And that will cost you next to nothing!!

I hope this helped you with how you can decorate and style your room for not very much money!
