Let’s normalize being content with our homes. And Let’s normalize being content with our homes.
And this can be very hard for me especially being an interior designer.

I think being content can mean appreciating what we have but still planning with making upgrades to our home in the future.

I didn’t think I’d live in my home for as long as I have and it’s made me appreciate what I have.

That doesn’t mean I don’t think of new ideas daily, LOL.

How to create an unlinkable home? You know the t How to create an unlinkable home?

You know the type, where everything in the room can be bought online from one store?

What happens is you get a room that becomes less about you and more about a styled room.

It doesn’t show your personality.

And what happens eventually is that we see this room on repeat and we become tired of seeing it.

The way to add your personality to your home is with art, textiles, paint colors, rug, curtains, vintage pieces, sentimental items. Things that maybe nobody else would have put together.

That’s what makes a room feel like yours instead of a showroom.

If you like this video, be sure to follow along for part 2.

I created Your Home, Finally to help you stop second-guessing every decorating decision and start seeing your room more clearly.

Inside, I walk you through what to keep, what to change, what’s missing, how to fix scale and layout, how to mix old and new, and how to make your home feel more like you without starting over (there are worksheets and 2 bonus videos as well).

The best way to see if a sofa is good quality, is The best way to see if a sofa is good quality, is to see what they look like years from now. And I do that by looking on Facebook Marketplace.

You can search by brand and even specific sofa type.

Pay attention to how old the sofa is. If it still looks great after 5-10 years, it’s probably good quality.

And if you keep seeing the same sofa over and over again looking wrinkly and disheveled, it might be a sign to keep looking! 👀

Buying a sofa can be expensive! I always buy sec Buying a sofa can be expensive!

I always buy secondhand sofas and I’ll tell you why.

Kiln-hardwood construction and springs are what I look for.

You can tell the quality of a sofa by how the cushions are even though the sofa is decades old. Are the cushions and overall look of the sofa still in good shape? Reupholstery would be perfect for it!

Eight-way hand-tied construction is traditionally considered high-end
Good-quality sinuous springs can also make an excellent sofa
Webbing is often used in modern sofas but the quality varies.

So I wouldn’t pass over a sofa like this just because the upholstery is ugly. Ugly fabric can be changed. A poorly made sofa can’t.

If the shape is good and the construction is solid, reupholstering an older sofa can sometimes make much more sense than buying a lower-quality new one

I’d much rather put money into reupholstering a beautifully made older sofa than spend the same amount on something new that’s going to look tired in a few years.

Would you consider buying an old sofa?

How can you make your home feel more like you? A How can you make your home feel more like you?

A beautiful home shouldn’t look like anyone could live there.

It will feel more like a staged home or showroom. Adding in the ‘Only-You Layer’ will help add your personality to your home. You can do that by adding in unique pieces or a collection of things that only you would choose together.

Adding in vintage pieces, thrifted or found items that reflect your personality will make a home feel more like your own.

Do you agree?

How do you decorate a small living room with a lar How do you decorate a small living room with a large sectional?

It’s a question I’ve been asked many times before. And I get it. If a large sectional is the only way to get enough seating for everyone at your home, then you need to make sure to offset it with equally substantial furniture but a minimal amount.

Everything in the room will be the focus so try not to add to much decor - pillows are art are great though!

At the end of the reel I gave two slightly different design options
1) faux tree in the corner with a gallery wall of art and a lamp on the side table
2) a plinth and statue in the corner, one large piece of art with a picture light sconce above it and wall sconces on either side of the TV

Also, did you notice I didn’t change anything else in the room - no flooring or paint. Painting the walls and adding molding would be wonderful but I wanted to make a point that the most important thing to focus on is the furniture scale.

A beautiful home needs your personal touch that no A beautiful home needs your personal touch that no designer can replicate, the items that only you can pick that tell your story.

This is why it’s so important to decorate in a way that is meaningful to you.

Personal touches like photos, thrifted items, items that have been passed down to you, a weird object no one else would think of to display...all these things make up the Only-You Layer.

It’s the layer I always had a hard time with when decorating clients’ homes. Adding decor pieces just to fill book shelves becomes so impersonal and give a ‘staged’ feeling when it’s not what’s reflected in the homeowner’s personality.

What do you think? Do you like the Only-You Layer?
