And it’s so easy to find images like this But wh And it’s so easy to find images like this But why? Why is grey on grey on grey on repeat in every house for sale and every new condo. Some of these are brand new penthouses. Now homeowners try to pair something warm to it and it doesn’t work unless it’s a neutral wood tone. I’m shocked in 2026 we’re still seeing this cold grey that was all the rage in like 2010. I think builders think this is a cool neutral and people buy because they don’t know better. But I’m pushing back. People want better than this! I’ve worked with so many clients that buy a condo like this and want to rip it out or paint over it or get new floors. What a waste. No more millennial grey please
Quietly interesting furniture is something I’ve al Quietly interesting furniture is something I’ve always been drawn to. Furniture that is a bit basic but there’s also something unique about it. When you find these pieces, it makes the space more interesting. And then decorating from there is easy. If you crave a cozy & designed space that is uniquely you, this is how I start with a room. Doing a room makeover with ALL new furniture and d Doing a room makeover with ALL new furniture and decor is easy. Creating a room with some items you already own or want to purchase second-hand is more challenging but more fun. Better for the wallet too! You’ll end up with something more unique and truly you. I removed the wall art as well as what’s listed in the video as they were hung too high and one piece of art on each wall is a bit bland. Variations of sizes of art pieces are much more interesting. Wait til the end...it’s...interesting LOL I found Wait til the end...it’s...interesting LOL I found some great things over the last month at thrift shops: 🪑Thick glass jars for cotton pads and cotton swabs for the bathroom 🪑An Emile Henry tagine steamer 🪑Old film strip reels 🪑Le Creuset white pot 🪑Portmeirion Botanic Garden set including candlesticks and salt & pepper shakers! 🪑A trio set of silver vases 🪑Mebel Italian tray 🪑Pottery Barn navy blue quilt 🪑Heavy metal bowl I turned into a large candle And the thing I found on the end, a bunch of wolves at the foot of an angel. Can I redecorate this room but keep the rug, pink Can I redecorate this room but keep the rug, pink chair and footstool? The rug fits the room nicely and the chair and rug match nicely so that was my starting off point. The couch was fighting against it and the winged armchair by the fireplace is blocking the flow of traffic into the room so I removed it. I love that armoire but don’t like furniture placed on a corner. Because there’s a window on that large wall, I opted for a lower cabinet. The long cabinet and coffee table are in a warmer wood than the flooring and they also match the lighter fireplace brick. Adding artwork on the wall above the cabinet and a lamp on other side with a few accessories make that wall feel cohesive. There is always more one can do - paint the walls, redo the flooring, change the fireplace in some way. But I wanted to show you that by starting with the big pieces of furniture first and not changing the floors, walls or fireplace, that the room can still work when on its own. So much harder than figuring out where to put the So much harder than figuring out where to put the sofa! If I picked plants based on scale, prettiness and color alone they would all die 😂 Trying to be a gardener now. Even though I grew up on a hobby farm and we had our own veggie garden, it does not come easy to me🤷🏼‍♀️ Do you find decorating harder inside or out? 😂🪏
You don’t need to replace everything in a room tha You don’t need to replace everything in a room that feels off. But something has to change. Asking what you love or want to keep (or can only afford to keep at the moment) is the first decision you need to make. Then the rest becomes easier. Here are some more details in the decorating choices: 🛋️I would get the most use out of this rug so you don’t have to replace it for a bigger size so pull it away from the window so just the front feet of the sofa are on it. 🛋️ Add a swivel chair in a fun pattern chair that still complements the couch and pulls from a color in the rug and now the chair can sit on the rug. 🛋️ There’s much grey in this room (on the floor, sofa and curtains!). I would add a nice beige linen curtain that brings out the beige in the rug. It would be awesome to remove that bulkhead but not necessary. 🛋️ The plants even though they are on stands still look too small and a bit cluttered for the eye. I would move all the plants and add one big tree like plant - it can be faux as long as it looks very real. A large natural, unglazed pot would work best too. 🛋️ The art is great - some side tables with lamps and pillows that ties in more beige and blue colors bring the whole room together. I like pillows that have some texture, some floral and a stripe to complement the stripe in the chair. 🛋️ I brought in a black square metal side table to add some black to match the TV and a fun white and blue lamp. 🛋️ I even added back a metal dog to the mix. In the before photo, there was a chrome metal dog on the floor. I brought in a brass dog and put it on the media cabinet along with another planted pot in a natural color pot. The scale of a room is more important than the act The scale of a room is more important than the actual furniture. 🪑 Scale means the size of furniture in relation to each other. For instance, how big the coffee table is for the room and the furniture around it. All the pieces of furniture the homeowner has wasn’t necessarily wrong, some of it just didn’t work together. Then you have to figure out, are you keeping the sofa and changing the coffee table or are you keeping the coffee table and changing the sofa? Because the two are fighting against each other. You keep asking these questions with every piece in the room until it all sizes up correctly. I also liked the homeowners collection of lamps as they were all different but similar in that they looked like they belonged in the same family. The two table lamps were too high because the side tables they were sitting on were too high. Either replace the tables OR replace the lamps. Not everything needs to be replaced and you can see that this game of keeping and swapping never ends! One other note, when you have different metals or woods or colors, it’s nice to repeat that color again at least once in the room which is why I wanted to make sure there was another hint of gold and black in the room. Changing the furniture isn’t always necessary when Changing the furniture isn’t always necessary when doing a room makeover. You can add visual interest and cohesion in other ways that makes the furniture seem like it belonged the entire time. Things I didn’t mention in the video: I removed the bulkhead above the curtains and replaced the curtains. The new chair has a subtle pattern so it doesn’t compete with the bold sofa. The end table between the two chairs is a round black metal table and the black is brought in again to the mirror above the fireplace and the gold of the lamp can be brought it elsewhere to the room with some framed photos or art pieces or wall sconces. It’s nice to repeat the metal or color someplace else in the room. There are so many different ways this one room can be decorated and I wanted to show you one way that felt like you didn’t need to go out and buy new furniture. I think there’s a huge group of people the design I think there’s a huge group of people the design industry has unintentionally left out. You don’t need someone to redesign your entire home. You probably already own things you love. But you’d still really like someone to tell you why the room feels off. What’s worth keeping. What needs to change. What to buy next. And how to know it’s going to work before you spend the money. That space between “hire an interior designer” and “figure it all out yourself”? That’s the space I’m interested in. Because after years of working in people’s homes, I don’t think most women need more inspiration. I think they need to understand how to make better decorating decisions. And once you know what to look for, you start seeing your home completely differently.
