Safari Tablecloth and Cake

A step by step tutorial showing how I made the safari tablecloth and the cake!

Safari Tablecloth And Cake - So Much Better With Age
I’ve been sharing with you this week my son’s safari themed birthday party. If you missed those posts, you can check them out here:
Today I’m going to share with you how I made the safari zebra tablecloths. Really simple but time consuming!
Good job to do in the evening during a movie 😉
Okay, here we go!
 SUPPLIES
– black marker
– black acrylic or fabric paint
– light colored fabric
– artist paint brushes
Laying out the supplies for the tablecloth.
Making the markings on the cloth.

TUTORIAL

1. Take a black marker and draw your zebra stripes all over the fabric. Leave some white space but try to make the stripes large enough to paint in.
2. Using an artist’s paintbrush {steal ones from your preschooler…oops!} paint in all the stripes with black paint.
3. Do this over and over until your hand cramps and you’re done!

The paint was purchased from a dollar store but if you were to use this tablecloth over again and wish to wash it I would use fabric paint. I still have my tablecloths but I’m not planning on washing them as I don’t know what will happen to my washing machine if I do! Also, make sure you DO NOT paint this over carpet as some of the paint seeps through to the other side. I just did this right on my hardwood floors and wiped up any extra mess although there wasn’t that much.
Now onto the cake!
Earlier this month, I shared with you my Best Carrot Cake Recipe Ever. I doubled that recipe to make this double layer cake.

I used two of these 9 x 12 cake pans. One cake recipe for each pan. That’s 6 cups total of shredded carrots!

Okay, I don’t know how to draw…like, at all! And if I don’t know how to draw then how am I going to pipe the icing?? And all my son wanted for his birthday this year was a damn giraffe. Awesome. The easiest animal in the world to draw, haha. I didn’t want to attempt the entire body so I came up with this little sketch below.
{I know, it’s okay to laugh}
A giraffe sketch for the cake.
Not bad, right?

Once I did the black piping, I just did simple stars to fill it all in and piped around the edges and “tried” to do zebra stripes on the sides with the leftover black icing.

I wanted a white background so I didn’t have to color the cream cheese icing. I made the icing for the light green and brown colors {just a simple butter, icing sugar, vanilla, milk recipe} but I bought little ready made icing tubes for the black, red, blue, and dark green icing.
I’m so happy with how it turned out and more importantly my son was thrilled!!!
