Steps 6-8 {Curtains}
Steps 1-2
Steps 3-5
You’re almost done! Now let’s finish with our last three steps. Steps 6-8…
STEP 6
Now move to the other vertical side of the panel. Cut the excess blackout lining so that it lays nicely under the fold. Stitch into place.
STEP 7
Stitching the top panel: Cut away approximately 2 inches of the blackout lining from the horizontal top {this allows less bulkiness for stitching}.
Fold over 1/2 – 1 inch of the fabric panel and iron into place along the horizontal top.
Fold over again approximately 2-3 inches of the horizontal fabric panel and stitch near the bottom of the first fold {see photo below}.
This will make a pocket for the curtain rod. You can still use clips. It looks nice with a large hem at the top regardless.
If you are hanging your curtains directly on the curtain rod {through the pocket you just made}, make sure you have enough room for the curtain rod by placing the curtain rod under the fabric fold before stitching! Fold over more fabric if you have a thicker curtain rod.
STEP 8
Hemming: Once you have all three sides of one panel stitched into place, hang the curtains on the curtain rod exactly how you’re going to hang them. Now decide how long you’d like the curtains to be. Do you want them to pool a little on the floor? Do you want them to skim the floor? Pin where you’d like them to be hemmed.
Take them down and fold over 1/2 – 1 inch then iron into place. Fold over that same amount and iron into place again. Stitch into place.
Now you’re done!
You did it! Aren’t you amazing!! Now everyone in your family will get a good night’s sleep and your house will look pretty too 😉
Oh, and there’s one more thing. If you are hanging your curtains with clips, try this little tip for making pinch pleats.
Just take the clip and pinch the back of the fabric to mimic pinch pleats. Easy peasy!
I hope you have a dreamy sleep with your new blackout curtains.
