I’m 49 and a bit embarrassed to admit that…. 1.I I’m 49 and a bit embarrassed to admit that….

1.I’m adopted and have never truly felt like I belong anywhere. I’ve tried to create my own space for myself with my blog, social media, and my home as a way of feeling like I belong to something. My close friends and my kids are my world.

2. I’ve constantly organized and stayed busy at home to combat my anxiety. I now try to relax as much as I can in the evenings but still feel like I should be doing more.

3. I’ve said yes to so many things over the years when my gut said no just to make the other person happy or just to avoid my feelings of anxiety.

4. Having a chaotic upbringing led to me wanting to control my environment by making it into a sanctuary of peace. Even if I was in a rental for a short time, I would always make sure the place I’ve lived in was decorated and organized nicely.

5. I’ve started my life over so many times, in my personal life (with relationships ending) and also in my business. I thought I would have life all figured out by now. I give everything my all and work so hard at whatever I do. My new chapter is about building a community where I can be authentically me.
This is the one thing you have to worry about when This is the one thing you have to worry about when you’re putting a room together.

And I’m using my basement as an example, because my basement is just a hangout for my kids (along with my treadmill) and I haven’t purchased any new furniture for this room, it’s just sort of happened. But it does work!

And the reason it works is because I did make sure that the scale of the furniture works together.

The size of it all works together. Imagine a tiny box of a coffee table in front of the couch, it would look funny, as an example.

So if you are saving up for furniture or waiting to figure out your style, just focus on scale and I promise you your room will look good in the meantime.

And adding artwork helps. 😉

(Also I said towards the end…when you’re waiting to put furniture together…I meant ROOM waiting to put a room together) 🥴
My 2 easy steps to finding your decorating style! My 2 easy steps to finding your decorating style!

It doesn’t need to be hard! But it can be overwhelming with all the great design inspiration out there.

And because everything costs so much, you want to make sure you make the right decision.

Here are 2 easy steps.

1) Gather images of everything you love (magazine cut outs, Instagram saves, or Pinterest pins) and don’t try to figure out why you love it.

Then step back and see if you can find a pattern or theme.

2) Find the one object in your house that you can’t live without - maybe it’s a vase, a piece of art - for me it’s my sofa. I’ve had it for 20 years,

Use this one item as a jumping off point. It’s your anchor. When you start to feel lost, go back to that item and ask yourself…will it go with this one piece?

I had it reupholstered once and will reupholster it again…if my cat ever stops scratching it.

Unpopular opinion from an interior designer Beca Unpopular opinion from an interior designer

Because I think we would all love hardwood or the look of hardwood up the stairs.

But it can be slippery, especially with kids.

Adding a carpet runner up the stairs is an excellent choice but now you are paying for two floorings on one staircase.

To make the stairs safe and look good and be good on your budget, adding a fun pattern carpet on the stairs is a great alternative!

No one can say I haven’t tried hard. I’ve gone t No one can say I haven’t tried hard.

I’ve gone through so many ‘starting over’ phases in my life I should be an expert by now but it just shows you that we are always learning and growing.

And if you feel like you’re too old to start over or to start something new, I promise you, you are not.

No matter what has happened in my life, I keep getting back up there. And I don’t know what the future holds but I’m excited for the journey (or at the very least, trying to convince myself of that).

I’m sharing with you how to create your home into I’m sharing with you how to create your home into your sanctuary and going over design basics with you.

This is Part 3

I’m showing you my floorplan of my living that I got from my realtor so that you can do the same - you don’t need any fancy CAD program.

You need to figure out where the pathways are, like I mentioned in my previous video.

Place the big furniture first - for the living room, it would be the couch/sofa. Then my little marble coffee table and the cabinet ACROSS from the couch with a TV above it (I know I said above...greenscreen recording was so difficult for me, I wasn’t about to redo it lol)

Then I added my two armchairs and the large vintage green rug.

The armchair that is by the window and fireplace gets moved over closer to the sofa when I have company over but for the day-to-day, it works to keep it near the window to fill that space and also keep the pathways clear.

Working with floorplans is so important especially when dealing with an awkward space.

Did you find this video helpful? Let me know in the comments!

OMG these cupboards are so dirty! Even after wipi OMG these cupboards are so dirty!

Even after wiping them down with a cloth.

Am I going to have to repaint them?

I got a Magic Eraser and dipped it into a bucket of warm water (get really wet then wring out a bit) and wiped it all over the cupboard door (I had drips of water coming down but it wasn’t sopping wet). Then get a damp cloth and immediately wipe the cupboard door again. Dry well with a dry cloth. I did one section at a time so the water wasn’t left on each door for very long.

It worked sooooo well!

Next let’s try it on doors.

I can always see hand marks on the doors in the hallway (I think they are handprints with hair product from the kids) and no amount of wiping will get it off except with this Magic Eraser technique.

I’m so happy this worked!! I have brand new cupboards and doors! Thank goodness, who wants to repaint? Especially since they were professionally spray painted.

Will you try this technique?

We are back with Part 2 of Design Basics! When y We are back with Part 2 of Design Basics!

When you are designing a room, you need to look at the floorplan of the space to really get a sense of where the furniture needs to go.

Each space in your home has a flow and you need to figure out where the pathways are in a space before you can figure out where to place the furniture.

You’ll need to locate
Doorways
Entrances
Windows
Electrical baseboard heaters or radiators

After that, you’ll start with the big furniture pieces that you know for sure you’ll need

For a living room, that would be a sofa
For a bedroom, a bed
For a dining room, a table
For an office, a desk

I know this seems obvious but finding a spot to put the sofa might be the hardest part in a living room. And if you are watching TV in this room, you’ll need to know where that relates to the sofa.

Start planning your space and the one big piece of furniture and come back from Part 3!

Here’s everything I know about interior design bas Here’s everything I know about interior design basics.

I’m going to share everything with you so you can create your home into your sanctuary.

Part 1

When you are designing a room, you need to know what that room is used for and who it is for
Is it for sleeping?
Eating?
Hosting?
Working?
All of the above?

This might seem like an obvious question to ask but let’s say you’ve saved an image of a living room that you LOVE and you want to replicate it. It has a beautiful couch, coffee table, paint color, decor items, rug, everything is perfection - but that’s someone else’s space…and yes it may look beautiful but we don’t know how they use their space.

Maybe your living room needs to have storage, room for hosting, room for toys, room for watching TV.

You need to get clarification of everything you need for that space and THEN you can design.

So make a list of all the activities that are done in that room, what people use that room and

Stay tuned for Part 2.

I used to be scared to live alone for one reason… I used to be scared to live alone for one reason…

Who would do the hard things?

Starting over can be scary.

I used to feel embarrassed to admit this, but I was always afraid to live alone.

Not because I didn’t want independence…
but because I wondered who would do the hard things.

Who would change light fixtures?
Who would figure things out?

But I’ve learned something.

Being with someone doesn’t automatically make life easier.

And being on your own doesn’t mean you can’t do hard things.

You can try.

And if it doesn’t work out… you can call an electrician.

But I did it and it looks so good! And I’m so proud of myself!

➡️ Comment SCONCES and I’ll DM the link for the light fixtures.
