How to Decorate a Normal Home – Part 1
If you have no architectural details in your home, here is how you can decorate a normal home to make it feel special!
If you were to start out with a home like this, it wouldn’t matter how you decorated it, the backdrop gives the room personality. There are so many details in just the architecture that make it special without any furniture in it.

Most people don’t have homes like this though. They have basic rooms with regular drywall and floors and no architectural details.

You then pair your basic room with basic furnishings and you can end up with a very dull feeling space.

If you buy a matching furniture set and then match your decor literally – the artwork, rug and pillows all match like they were bought as a set…

What you’ll get is a home that feels more staged than personal.

You may then feel the need to add more to the room but you’ll end up with the same but cluttered.
(tried to find a photo that conveyed the feeling of a staged look with clutter which was hard to find, not necessarily anything wrong with this photo)

If you choose furniture that has quietly interesting details, the furniture then becomes the backdrop of the room.
I don’t mean trendy furniture that will go out of style in a few years.

What I mean are subtle details that make the furniture feel unique.

The majority of my furniture I’ve had for 10+ years and some of it I bought new and some of it was secondhand but most of it has a unique detail. So it doesn’t mean that ‘interesting’ has to be expensive.

Quietly interesting details include: a curved leg, caster feet, piping details, fabric pattern, unique carvings, a mix of old and new, different woods and metals.

These furniture details elevate the room instantly so now your eye thinks the room is special.

You still have a basic box of a room. But now the furniture is the foundation or the architectural details.
Not all of your furniture needs to be unique but you can have all your furniture with unique details. Because you have a basic box for a room.
