How to Choose a Rug Size for the rooms In Your House

An area rug for a room makes a world of difference! A rug is that item that interior designers will say is a must have in a room but the one thing that home owners tend to stay away from because of the cost and not knowing the right size to purchase.

Choosing the right size rug can make or break a room. We’ve all seen spaces where the rug was way too small and it looked ridiculous. It can be challenging but it doesn’t have to be! I’ve narrowed down the easiest way to size a rug for your living room, dining room and bedroom.

Living Room

For a rug in the living room, all the furniture should be on the rug or at the very least the front legs of the furniture. Easy peasy, right? Why do we make things so hard?

All furniture on the rug or at least the front legs.

This rug I added to the living room in our previous house makes the whole room warm and inviting.

The rug in Jenna Sue’s gorgeous home adds a visual splash to the neutral space. The front legs of the furniture are just touching the rug here too.

Haus Love did both both ways with their rugs. The smaller rug looks like it only covers the front legs but then they layered in a larger rug for extra texture. Gorgeous!

Dining Room

For the dining room, the rug should cover all the legs of the chairs as well as enough space for when you pull out the chairs. This one is pretty easy! The dining room needs a large rug depending on how big your table and chairs are.

I love this dining room from Mindy Gayer and this rug adds an organic feel to the space. The chairs are not bulky so the rug is a perfect fit. If the chairs were bigger, then the rug would need to be bigger too (obviously) but you are learning now, right?!

The more rug the better like in this beautiful dining room from Studio McGee. It’s very thoughtfully chosen as the room is very large and can handle a larger rug.

You can even add an oval rug to a rectangular table like this one from JDP Interiors as long as there’s enough room when you pull the chairs out to sit.

Bedroom

Putting the rug under the bottom legs of your bed looks so good! Amber Lewis says to make sure it extends out 3 feet from the end of the bed. The rug doesn’t need to extend under the night tables. If your rug is large enough and it can cover the area well, you can put it under the night tables just make sure the rug goes to the back legs of the night tables.

I love Amber Lewis‘ designs and her placement of rugs. In the bedroom, you can have the rug under just the lower part of the bed to add that custom feel.

Here’s another example from the uber talented Jean Stoffer Design. This yellow rug really adds that custom component to the space.

Odd Layouts

Not everyone has the luxury of a lot of space to place a rug.

Our current living room is long and narrow so it’s hard to put furniture across from the couch.

Also, there is a wall that juts out so there’s only one area to put it. I like how the rug in this awkward space still defines the seating area even though there are side chairs that aren’t on the rug. The two side tables, sofa and coffee table are all on the rug so it hits all the marks. If there wasn’t a rug in this room, I think it would funny with all the furniture ‘floating’ and not look anchored. At least in this way, it defines a living room.

There are so many areas in the home that we can place a rug that makes the whole room feel plush and comfortable and adds that layered look to the space.

  1. Beautiful living room! Mine is basically the same layout but with a sliding glass door where your window is, and it’s wider, but not enough to have furniture facing the couch. My couch is also against the wall. It’s complicated to choose a rug for and 10×14 is a huge purchase. May I ask what size your rug is? It’s a solution I haven’t seen yet except on your blog and it’s very helpful!
