Things I Love (and Don’t Love) About My Kitchen 10 Years Later
Check out all the things that still bother me about my kitchen and what things I still love!
I moved into this house and renovated it 10 years ago so I thought it would be fun to go through all the kitchen details to see what I wish I didn’t do and what I love about it still.
Each of these points are good to consider if you are renovating your kitchen. Some of these are worth it to spend money on and some are not. It all depends what bothers you, what will ultimately bother you.
I’ll share 5 things that still bother me 10 years later and 5 things I still love about it. Here we go!

Things I Don’t Like About My Kitchen
1. The post in my kitchen island
I took down two walls in my kitchen, one of them was load bearing so I knew I would need to replace that with a beam. But when my contractor was taking the ceiling down, he noticed the joists were running diagonally from the middle of the ceiling, so bizarre. Because of that, I would need two beams put in and I would lose my big picture window. I decided it against because I didn’t want to lose my big window and it would also increase my budget. I didn’t like it then and I still don’t like it. Some

2. Regular, non-panel ready dishwasher.
I love symmetry and because the dishwasher is sitting right next to the sink, I really wish the dishwasher was panel ready. It would look so nice if it just blended in and looked like a cabinet. I also do not like how the side panels come all the way down to the floor.

3. White grout in tiled wall
I love my tiled walls in my kitchen but because they are white tiles with white grout, you can barely see that I have a tiled wall. I had white subway tile in my previous kitchen but charcoal grey grout and I loved it but I wanted to do something different in this kitchen.

4. Kitchen island color
I chose a different paint color for my kitchen island but it’s hard to see that it’s different as it’s so light. It’s painted in Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore and the rest of my cabinet (and walls) is Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I wish I painted it a bit darker for contrast.

5. Different color cabinets
I thought I was going to stay in this house for just a year so I made sure to pick white for the overall color for my kitchen but over the years, I’ve thought so many times of wishing I painted it a different color. White is always good for resale but I wish I was more daring and picked a different color. That would also change my choice on countertop and tile so it’s definitely not an easy change.

Things I Still Love About My Kitchen
1. Tiled walls
I love the entire wall of tile on the wall with windows and the wall with the range hood. I would 100% do that again (but with a different color grout or different tile altogether). I love an entire wall of tile.
2. Layout
Removing the little eating nook that was in the kitchen and extending the countertop to create a baking area was the best decision! Me and my daughter love to bake so the extra storage for baking supplies is amazing. Also, who wouldn’t like more kitchen counters!

3. Kitchen island
Even though I have the post in the island, I would still take down walls to get the right layout. I love the large island with the microwave drawer in it and all the drawers for my pots, pans, plates, and bowls. There are is even some hidden storage where the stools are on one side which is perfect for storing vases.

4. Minimal Upper Cabinets
I’m so glad I chose open shelves above the dishwasher and one cabinet with a glass front. This was a fairly new thing 10 years ago and I’m so happy with the decision. We use our drinking glasses a lot but I don’t need a lot of them so it’s easy to take them out of the dishwasher and directly onto the open shelves.
5. Pantry Addition and Counter Depth Fridge
Being able to add a pantry to my kitchen right next to the fridge is a game changer. It has pull-out shelves and it is used to the max! Also, a counter-depth fridge is a must so that it doesn’t stick out past the cabinetry.

I hope this has helped you if you are deciding on renovating your kitchen. Would any of my dislikes bother you? Perhaps it’s just me! Let me know in the comments below.
