I’m sharing with you today my love of milk glass light fixtures and why it’s a style that will always remain timeless.
Milk glass is an opaque or semi-opaque white glass that has a soft, cloudy appearance. It was popular in the 1800s and again in the 1930s-1950s.
In the Victorian era, oil lamps were milk glass oil lamps were quite common and then popular in kitchens and schoolhouses from the 1900s-1940s. Because of the common use in schoolhouses, a popular term is also schoolhouse light fixture.
Milk glass light fixtures are so timeless because they go with many different styles and they cast a warm, even glow. The look vintage without look heavy or too ornate. They also look good with woods and metal finishes.
They look so good in laundry rooms/mud rooms and this is the second mudroom I’ve had a milk glass schoolhouse light fixture (see above photo).
Authentic milk glass is heavier glass and has a slightly warmer/yellow tone to it and can show irregularities. Newer milk glass is often a lighter weight and technically opal glass and are in widely reproduced but don’t let that take deter you. In this case, I don’t feel there is anything wrong with buying a new opal glass or milk glass light fixture. They still look so good!

I have 4 beautiful antique school house lights hanging in my home and many globes without light fixture. I Decorate with lose globes also. They were taken out of old highschool in our area before demolished. My husband attended that school and was the last class to graduate there. An elderly friend saved them. God bless Dick’s foresight. They are a beautiful treasure.
