I made this earthy concrete bowl for a project in my book, French Vintage Decor. If you’ve ever wanted to create something with concrete, this bowl project is the perfect decorative item to start with.
PART 1 – HOW TO MAKE THE CONCRETE BOWL
Supplies:
- vegetable oil or household grease
- 2 stainless steel bowls (one large bowl 8-10 quart, one small bowl 2-3 quart) I got mine at the dollar store and use these only for craft projects, not for kitchen use – similar bowls here
- bucket
- Quickrete concrete mix
- weights (rocks or bricks with a piece of wood)
- old towel
- mallet
- paper towel
Directions:
1.Rub oil on the inside of the large bowl and outside of small bowl with vegetable oil and paper towel.
2. Fill the bucket with approximately 3 L of concrete powder and mix in water until the consistency of pancake batter stirring with trowel.
3. On a flat level surface, pour mixed concrete into large bowl filling about three-quarters full.
4. Fill the small bowl with weights (rocks) and push down in the centre of the large bowl until both rims of the bowls are close to even. If the bowl tries to float up, add more weights to the small bowl.
5. Leave to dry for approximately 24 hours.
6. Tip the bowls over on a soft surface like an old towel and gently tap to remove.
7. The bowl will be heavy so use the towel to help flip it up.
8. Add moss to your concrete bowl in the next section.
Sidebar: Water will rise up from the bowl and that’s okay. It will give you a nice smooth top to your bowl.

part 2 – Add moss to the concrete bowl
If you’d like to add moss to the concrete bowl, here is what you’ll need:
Supplies:
- 6 inch diameter styrofoam ball
- Spanish moss (to fill around bowl)
- moss in various types and colours
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
Directions:
1.Place the styrofoam ball in the middle of the concrete bowl and hot glue to the bottom of the bowl.
2. Stuff the Spanish moss all around the styrofoam ball.
3. Hot glue the flat sheets of moss in different colours all around the ball.
4. Hot glue different shapes and colours of moss over top of the flat sheet moss.
Sidebar: Make sure to get the correct size styrofoam ball for your size of concrete bowl. The size ball I chose was a few inches shorter than the diameter of my bowl for a more subtle roundness.

Hi Jane,
Several years ago I made outdoor ‘troughs’ using a similar method. I left them in the garden at the old place but they turned out great. LOVE your bowl. It is beautifully done. xo Diana
Oh what a wonderful idea, Diana!

Thanks Regina, It really is easy! Let me know if you tackle it!

Have you tried hypertufa. It’s much lighter snd looks like natural limestone.
I haven’t! I’ll have to look into it. Thanks for sharing.
